If you are into the world of architecture, then you’ve probably heard his name once or a dozen times. That’s right folks, Mr. Robert Ivy.
He graduated Tulane University with a Masters of Architecture. He didn’t stop there though, he also has a Bachelors of Arts degree in English from Sewanee: The University of the South.
He went on to become the Vice President and Chief Executive Officer of the American Institute of Architects. (AIA)
He then was named CEO in 2011. Impressive, right?
Since he graduated, he has always had an impressive career. In 1996 he was the Editor in Chief of Architectural Record and played a viable part to make it the world’s most widely read architectural journal.
He became the Vice President and Editorial Director of McGraw-Hill Construction Media shortly after. He also hand a hand in selecting architect Frank Gehry to design the Dwight E. Eisenhower Memorial. He has also served three times as the U.S. Commissioner at the Venice Architecture Biennale.
He has received countless awards. Under Ivy’s leadership Architectural Record has received numerous publishing industry honors, including the premier magazine journalism award, the American Society of Magazine Editors National Magazine Award for General Excellence, a rare achievement for a professional journal. In 2009, he received the Crain Award.
In 2010 he was named “Master Architect” for his effectiveness in communicating the value of design. He shares this honor with seven others in the fraternity’s 100-year history and the only architect selected in the 21st century. Again, impressive.
Robert is the author of the biography Fay Jones: Architect, now in its third edition, and speaks to lay audiences about the role and meaning of architecture in our lives. He is truly an inspiration. Ivy is an accomplished communicator, having delivered countless keynote speeches at U.S. and international events and interviewed leading figures in architecture.
